Banking Services

Within the campus, there is a Santander bank branch and ATM machines for Santander and Banco do Brasil. To open a bank account, you will need copies of your identification documents and proof of address in Brazil. The bank will also ask for your CPF (see separate section below) and proof of funds order from your bank in your home country. If you are under 21 years of age, you must present written authorization from your legal guardian, or from the Institution that pays your scholarship, where applicable.

You will find many other banks in downtown Itajaí, where you can also use ATM Machines. Banks open Monday to Friday, from 11am to 4 pm.

Foreign Exchange

The official currency of Brazil is the "Real" (plural: Reais).

Foreign Currency can be exchanged at the banks in Itajaí and Balneário Camboriu, as well as at the various foreign exchange bureaus. You will be asked to show identification e.g. your passport, and to fill out a form with your personal details.

The CPF (Individual Tax ID Number) is a document issued by the Brazilian Federal Revenue Department. You will need one to open a Bank account, and for various other financial transactions. However, this document is not compulsory for those staying in Brazil for less than 12 months.

To apply for a CPF, go to the Federal Revenue office in Itajaí, taking your passport, and a declaration from the Univali stating that you are a regular student here.
